Pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) block as opioid sparing treatment for acute headache in spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage
Nearly all patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage experience headaches of varying intensity, and in about 90%, headaches are severe. The degree of headache control is poor with nearly 90% of patients experiencing severe pain despite the use of combined analgesics.
This is a phase 2 multicenter, randomized, double blind, saline- and active- controlled, sequential parallel comparison design study. Study participants will be randomized to receive a bilateral PPF active nerve block or sham block (saline injection) for two consecutive days and an optional open label PPF block between the third and fourth day.
